Description
Nu Dawn Eggs, produced by Nu Dawn Eggs (NDE), is a remarkable independent egg producer in South Africa. Let’s crack open some details about these eggs:
- Origin and Ownership:
- NDE has been operating since 2001.
- It was initially part of the Nulaid Eggs division of Pioneer Foods.
- In 2001, with Pioneer Foods’ support, a group of employees secured a loan to buy the business. They changed the name to uKhahlamba Poultry Farm (UPF).
- In 2008, UPF became black-owned and decided to supply table eggs directly to the market under the brand Nu Dawn Eggs.
- Production and Quality:
- NDE maintains a consistent capacity of over 400,000 hens across 10 houses.
- The layer hens are primarily Lohmann Silver and Lohmann Brown breeds, with plans to transition to Dekalb Amberlink layers.
- Point-of-lay pullets arrive at NDE at 18 weeks and spend 54 weeks in egg production before being culled at 72 weeks.
- The culled hens are then sold live in bulk to buyers, mainly from the KZN South Coast area.
- Management and Commitment:
- Seo Mtetwa, the managing director and majority shareholder, actively oversees day-to-day operations.
- NDE’s commitment to quality and consistency has made it a reliable supplier to retailers and hawkers across KZN and even as far as Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.
